1) What is an eBook?
An eBook is an electronic book that you can read on a computer screen or hand held device. Adobe digital management (DRM) helps protect Adobe PDF files. We use Adobe’s eBook technology which is based on PDF. ICC eBook can be read on Windows® and Macintosh computers, and Palm OS® PDAs.
2) Why choosing the eBook format?
• To save time: you can download and read your eBook immediately after receiving the link giving you access to the file. • To save money: no handling or delivery charges. • To save space on your bookshelf: you can store your own personal library of eBooks on your PC, Laptop or hand held device and your eBook remains on your computer when you are done reading it. • You can take your whole electronic library with you when travelling with your laptop or hand held device. • You can highlight and add notes to your eBook. • eBooks allow you to search for keywords / topics of particular interest to you. • eBooks can even be read out loud for you by the computer (if enabled by publisher).
3) How is an eBook different from a PDF file?
A PDF eBook is a PDF file that is copyright-protected using Adobe DRM (Digital Rights Manager). eBooks may also have certain permissions set to control if the eBook can be printed, copied or when it expires.
4) What are the technical requirements to successfully read ICC eBooks?
To read an eBook, you need the free Adobe Digital Editions software, version 1.7.1 or higher. You will also need an Internet connection to authorize your device for digital rights management and to download the digital edition. ADE is delivered with your eBook and you will be prompted to install it in order to read the eBook. You can also download ADE at: http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/
ADE does not require DRM Activation and is easy to use. ADE exists in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Brazilian Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese.
The minimum system requirements for Adobe® Digital Editions are as follows:
Windows • Microsoft® Windows® 2000 with Service Pack 4, Windows XP with Service Pack 2, or Windows Vista® (Home Basic 32-bit and Business 64-bit editions supported) • Intel® Pentium® 500MHz processor • 128MB of RAM • 800x600 monitor resolution Mac • PowerPC: Mac OS X v10.4.10 or v10.5; PowerPC® G4 or G5 500MHz processor; 128MB of RAM • Intel®: Mac OS X v10.4.10, v10.5 or v10.6; 500MHz processor; 128MB of RAM Supported browsers and Adobe Flash versions • Windows: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or 7, Mozilla Firefox 2, Adobe Flash® Player 8 or 9 (Windows Vista requires Flash 9.0.28 to address a known bug) • Mac: Apple Safari 2.0.4, Mozilla Firefox 2, Adobe Flash Player 8 or 9 For more information about system requirements, please also read http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/systemreqs
5) Do I have to go through a DRM activation process to use Digital Editions?
Yes. Digital Editions includes a set-up assistant which makes it easy for you to authorize your computer.
6) Why do I need to authorize my computer with my Adobe ID?
Some digital publications that you purchase online or check out from a library may contain digital rights management (DRM) protection that restricts the items from being shared with others. In the past, this could limit the ability to read your items on additional computers owned by you. It could even prevent you from moving your items when you bought a new computer. Digital Editions helps ensure that your eBooks and other digital publications are not "locked" on one computer — they are assigned to you through your Adobe ID. Digital Editions also adds support for the next generation of mobile devices. Adobe membership is free and registration only takes a minute. As a member, you have access to trial downloads, hundreds of free product extensions, and special community areas. Your membership also allows you to view and manage your activity in the Adobe Worldwide Store.
7) Is Easy Activation still an option?
Digital Editions does not require you to authorize your computer with an Adobe ID. This option is necessary to address concerns about some users' needs for privacy (for example, library patrons and minors). However with this option, protected items that you have already downloaded or will download later are tied to that particular computer and are not readable on other computers or devices. They also can't be restored from backup if the operating system is reinstalled. 8) How long will it take to download an eBook?
Download times depend on both the size of the file and the speed of your computer modem.
9) Do I need to be online to read eBooks?
No, you do not need to be online to read eBooks. After the eBook is downloaded you can disconnect from the network and read it offline. For more detailed information or if you have problems downloading your eBooks, please refer to the ADE FAQs on the Adobe website: http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/faq/
10) How do I read ICC eBooks on my iPhone or iPad?
To read our ebooks on iPhone or iPad, you need the Bluefire Reader software which can be downloaded for free at: http://itunes.apple.com/app/bluefire-reader/id394275498?mt=8
Important Note: Like Adobe Digital Editions, Bluefire Reader must be authorized. If you already have ADE on your computer, make sure that Bluefire Reader is authorized with the same Adobe ID. You can check the Adobe ID that Bluefire Reader is authorized with from the Info Screen of the Library View. It should say 'Adobe eBooks are Enabled' and show you the ID. In ADE, you can check the authorization by choosing 'Authorize Computer...' from the Library Menu. Using the same authorization allows you to read your ebooks on both devices.
